It's hard to imagine two teams more evenly matched. Playing before an estimated crowd of 800 fans screaming themselves hoarse in Wittenberg's HPER Center, the Bears escaped with a dramatic 3-2 win to claim the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship and advance to the Tournament Quarterfinals.
Wittenberg jumped in front with a convincing win in the first game as junior Sarah Yuskewich (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) distributed 17 of her game-high 68 assists and the Tigers posted an outstanding .312 attack percentage. In the second game, Yuskewich had 18 more assists and sophomore Emily Dixon (Granville, Ohio/Granville) had six kills, but fans got a taste of the tense things to come as the two teams battled through a remarkable seesaw game.
In Game 3, the tides began to turn as ONU's attack percentage rose to .250. Game 4 followed much of the same script as ONU jumped out in front early and stayed in front the rest of the way. Then came Game 5, a fine back-and-forth affair before Wittenberg took a 14-12 lead and served for the match. However, ONU won three straight points to take a one-point lead. After a kill by Michelle Emming (West Chester, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) tied things at 15, the Bears ended it with a pair of kills.
Statistically, Yuskewich had 68 assists and 23 digs, junior Kristin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) finished with 27 kills, senior Lindsay Nelson (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) had 19 kills, Dixon had 17 kills and seven total blocks (six solo), and four players finished in double figures in digs, led by Emilie Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) with 28.
In Friday's semifinal match, the Tigers swept their way into the championship game with a 3-0 (30-22, 32-30, 30-15) win over Alma College. The Tigers were dominant in the first and third games, but they had to rally a bit in Game 2. Alma took a 25-22 lead before the Tigers rallied back and eventually took a 30-29 lead on a kill by Dixon. After the teams traded points, Michelle Emming hammered home the game-winner for Wittenberg, and the momentum carried into Game 3 as the Tigers won handily. Wittenberg put four players in double figures in kills, led by Nelson with 13. Fox and Michelle Emming each posted kill totals of 11 and Dixon added 10 kills. Yuskewich chipped in with 37 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, five players finished in double figures in digs, led by 22 from Schmid and 16 from Jennifer Emming (West Chester, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame).
Also last week, postseason North Coast Athletic Conference honors were handed out, and as usual Wittenberg cleaned up. Yuskewich was named Player of the Year for a second straight year, while Schmid took home the first Libero of the Year honor. Fox joined them on the All-NCAC first-team, while Nelson and Michelle Emming made the second team.

In the Trinity Invitational, Wittenberg beat two ranked teams and narrowly lost to a third in the first five-game match of the Tigers' season. Wittenberg opened the tourney with a 3-1 win over Savannah College of Art & Design and followed that with a 3-1 win over sixth-ranked Mount St. Joseph. The win over the Mountie Lions was crucial as it gave the Tigers the inside track on the No. 1 ranking in the Great Lakes Region and potential home court advantage in the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Tigers rounded out the weekend with a 3-2 defeat against ninth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater, the same team that knocked Wittenberg out of last year's NCAA Division III Tournament en route to the school's first national championship. Wittenberg defeated the Warhawks earlier this season. Then Wittenberg defeated the host Trinity University Tigers 3-1 in the championship match and were awarded the first-place hardware based on tiebreaker criteria. Trinity was ranked No. 3 nationally heading into the weekend.
Individually, junior Kristin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) had an outstanding weekend with more than 70 kills in the four matches. She and senior Lindsay Nelson (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw), who had 22 kills in the win over Trinity, were both named to the all-tournament team. In addition, junior Sarah Yuskewich (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) recorded at least 50 assists in each match.
In the NCAC Tournament match against Ohio Wesleyan, the top-seeded Tigers overwhelmed the eighth-seeded Battling Bishops by a 3-0 count, with all three games decided by at least a 14-point margin. The Tigers, who have won eight of the last 10 NCAC tournament titles, including the last six consecutively, advanced to the NCAC Tournament semifinals on Friday against fourth-seeded Denison, a winner over Wooster in other quarterfinal action.
Wittenberg was in control throughout the match and never used most of its top players. Among the statistical leaders were senior Michelle Emming (West Chester, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame), who had 13 digs and 10 kills, senior Jennifer Emming (West Chester, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame), who had 11 digs and 10 kills, and senior Katie Preuss (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), who finished with 21 assists and 11 digs.

The Tigers are 21-5 overall and 8-0 in the NCAC heading into this weekend's tournament at Trinity (Texas), where six nationally ranked teams are going head-to-head. Wittenberg has now won 51 straight NCAC matches, dating back to October 1997 and a five-game defeat at Case Western Reserve. The Tigers have also won 18 consecutive NCAC Tournament matches - and six straight tourney titles - dating back to a 3-2 loss to Ohio Wesleyan in the 1996 championship match.
Dating back to 1992, Wittenberg has won eight of the last 10 NCAC Tournament championships, and the top-seeded Tigers will begin the quest for their ninth crown in 11 years on Tuesday with a home match against eighth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4. A win in that match and the Tigers would advance to the NCAC Tournament semifinals, an event Wittenberg would host at 5:30 and 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the HPER Center. The conference tourney title match is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.
Wittenberg is angling for an eighth straight NCAA Division III Tournament berth and an opportunity to extend the successes of a year ago, when the Tigers finished 34-8 overall and won the first Great Lakes Regional title in school history. Wittenberg, which is ranked fifth in the nation in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, lost to eventual national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater in the national quarterfinals a year ago.
The Tigers have displayed tremendous balance in 2003 under the direction of first-year Head Coach Paco Labrador, who took over for the winningest coach in school history, Connie Surowicz, in April. Junior Sarah Yuskewich (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson), a first-team All-America selection in 2002, leads the team, the conference and ranks fifth in the nation in assists per game at 12.79, a year after she set an NCAA Division III record with 2,125 assists in a season. She has already set a school record for assists in a career. Junior Kristin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) leads the team and ranks third in the NCAC in kills with 3.59 per game. Junior Emilie Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) ranks first in the conference and third in the nation with 7.40 digs per game, and she is on pace to set a school record for digs in a season.

Last weekend, the finishing touches to another masterpiece were applied in an NCAC tri-match at Denison, where Wittenberg easily defeated Hiram and the host Big Red by 3-0 scores. The Tigers secured the No. 1 seed in the NCAC Tournament, which opens Nov. 4 with quarterfinal games. A win over eighth-place Ohio Wesleyan in that match will earn the Tigers the right to host the NCAC Tournament semifinals and finals on Nov. 7 and 8.
In the win over Hiram, which is having the best season in school history and recently topped 20 wins for the season, junior setter Sarah Yuskewich (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) finished with 39 assists, seven digs and six block assists, while sophomore Emily Dixon (Granville, Ohio/Granville) added seven kills and seven block assists. Senior Lindsay Nelson (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) led the offensive attack with 15 kills in 27 attempts.
Against Denison, the NCAC regular season and tournament runner-up each of the last three years, Wittenberg got 36 assists and 12 digs from Yuskewich, seven kills and 20 digs from senior Michelle Emming (West Chester, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and nine kills in 17 attempts from freshman Heather Kelly (Marion, Ohio/River Valley).
For the season, Yuskewich leads the NCAC and ranks fifth in the nation in assists per game at 12.86. A year after setting a Wittenberg, NCAC and NCAA Division III record with 2,125 assists in the 2002 season, Yuskewich now has 985 assists in 2003.
Junior Emilie Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) ranks first in the NCAC and third in the nation in digs per game with 7.49. Her season total of 629 is already the fourth-highest in school history. Not coincidentally, Wittenberg ranks fifth as a team in the nation in assists per game (14.20) and 10th in digs per game (23.87).
Next up for the Tigers is an important road trip to Trinity in San Antonio, Texas. Five of the six teams, including the host school, are ranked in the top 25, including Mt. St. Joseph, which is vying for the top spot in the region with Wittenberg.

The six-time defending NCAC regular season and tournament titlists have not given up a game, much less a match, in more than two weeks. Included in that time span are four matches against top-flight competition in the Wittenberg Invitational last weekend.
In that invitational, Wittenberg defeated Defiance, which was previously unbeaten in 11 matches this season, Calvin, the favorite in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, and Ithaca, the top team in its conference this season and annually a qualifier for the NCAA Division III Tournament, in pool play by 3-0 scores. Then in the championship match, the Tigers dismantled regional rival Ohio Northern 3-0. The Polar Bears are the defending Ohio Athletic Conference champions and came into the tourney ranked No. 13 in the nation.
For her performance in the tournament, junior setter Sarah Yuskewich (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) was named NCAC Player of the Week. All she did was average 15 assists per game in the four matches and lead her team to four wins by comfortable margins. Her best showing came against ONU, a match in which she totaled 46 assists.
Other top statistical performances were turned in by junior middle hitter Kristin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion), who twice pounded 13 kills in a match and finished with 45 total kills, junior libero Emilie Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson), who had at least 16 digs in each game, including 29 in the championship match, and 12 kills each in the win over Calvin from senior outside hitters Lindsay Nelson (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) and Michelle Emming (West Chester, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame).
The Tigers return to NCAC action this weekend with a tri-match at home against Oberlin and Wooster. Then Wittenberg takes on Ohio Wesleyan next Wednesday, followed by the Wittenberg National Invitational II, which includes eight top-quality teams, including nationally ranked Mount St. Joseph, Elmhurst, Washington University and Wartburg.
