Tigers Post Best Team Score Ever In Strong Finish At Wilmington

Kristina Herman
WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers have shown steady improvement in the 2007-08 season, and that upward trend continued in perhaps the best weekend since the program was granted varsity status in 2003. A day after taking the program's first-ever team title, the Tigers placed a deceiving fourth in the Wilmington Spring Invitational with a score of 350, just eight strokes off the school record set last fall at Ohio Dominican.

To put things in perspective, the Tigers finished 42 strokes back of nationally ranked Otterbein, which won the one-day event going away. But the team's improvement has been dramatic in 2007-08, as the school record for top team score has consistently been lowered, and the Tigers are now within striking distance of powerhouse programs like Allegheny, a national qualifier a year ago and the second-place finisher with a 327 at Wilmington.

Three Tigers finished in a tie for 14th place, including junior Jennifer Petro (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart). She has scored 84 before, unlike freshman Anna Bencriscutto (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge), who bettered her previous collegiate best by one stroke, and sophomore Kristina Herman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who shot six strokes better than her previous low.

Freshman Sara Mewhort (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula) rounded out the Wittenberg scorers with a 98.

Wittenberg puts the finishing touches on the 2007-08 season at Walsh University on Monday, April 28.
