Tigers Take Top Spot By Wide Margin At Muskingum

Anne Busam
NEW CONCORD, Ohio - After knocking on the door in each of the last three tournaments, the Wittenberg Tigers kicked it in at Muskingum, battling through difficult weather conditions to post a team score of 342 to easily outdistance the other six teams in the field.

Wittenberg finished an astonishing 43 strokes ahead of Capital in the team competition, while freshman Anne Busam (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) picked up her first individual collegiate title with an 80 on the par-71, 5,786-yard course. She was one of five Tigers to place in the top 10, and she won the first-place trophy by a whopping four strokes.

Taking fourth place with an 85 was senior Jennifer Petro (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart). She was followed by freshmen Carrie Frey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) and Nicole Momsen (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula) with an 88 and 89, good for sixth and seventh, respectively. It marked the first time since Wittenberg established women's golf as a varsity sport in 2003 that all four scorers broke the 90-stroke plateau.

Not far behind was freshman Heather Hendrickson (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers), who carded a 92, good for 10th place. Also of note was the play of junior Kaci McClure (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto), who posted a 93 for 11th place.

The Tigers put the wraps on the 2008-09 regular season with the Wittenberg Invitational at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield on Saturday, April 18. That will be followed by the second annual Tiger Golf Team Family and Friends Fund-raiser on Saturday, April 25.
