Wittenberg Ends Two Decade Streak With Upset of Denison
|
Jenny Schaafsma
|
Initially, it appeared as though the Tigers would be overwhelmed by the visitors, who dominated possession for the vast majority of the first half, but could only break through twice against freshman goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) in the first half. She was the story of the afternoon, saving 13 shots, including numerous from point-blank range during a pivotal stretch in the second half.
After taking a 2-1 lead, Wittenberg never trailed, thanks to three goals in the first stanza from sophomore Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern). The Tigers stunned the Big Red with a flurry midway through the second half to build their largest lead at 8-4 before holding on down the stretch.
The back line in front of Schaafsma, including junior Andrea Berry (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) and sophomore Amanda Trepanier (Naperville, Ill./Central), consistently steered the Big Red into difficult-angled shots.
Already having doubled their win total from the last three years, Wittenberg searches to assure themselves a spot in NCAC postseason play when they travel to Oberlin on Saturday, April 18, for a 2 p.m. opening draw.
