Wittenberg Reserves vs. Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Wittenberg women's soccer reserves set the tone for what proved to be one of the most successful road trips up to "Gatorland" for both the men's and women's soccer teams in recent history. Having become very familiar with the road over the month of September, this group of Tigers could care little about the rain, the early morning game or the long bus trip, they just want to play. They set the tempo early and controlled the action and game from start to finish en route to a 2-0 win over the Allegheny College women's soccer reserve team.

The defense, anchored by Emily Stover, Stacy Fennell and Abby Johnson, continually started the team's attacks by playing balls out of the back and into the midfield or the forwards for combinations that would prove too much for Allegheny. Kelly Kreiger got the scoring going midway through the first half with a nicely driven shot into the far post, and the Tigers went into halftime up 1-0. The second half was much of the same as the midfield work of Aimee Erney, Courtney Burchett and Rachel Ridgeway provided the second goal. Ridgeway drove a low shot on the wet grass that just had too much on it for the Allegheny keeper.

Although the score would stay at 2-0, the work of Wittenberg forwards Stephanie Sharp, Lindsay Zigler and Kreiger kept the Gator goalie very busy, and to her credit she made some very fine saves. Lastly, and not to be outdone, Wittenberg's goalie Eileen Quinn closed the door on any hope of a comeback as she parried a second half Gator shot around the post and grabbed the ensuing corner with poise and confidence that no doubt inspired the shutouts of both the Tigers' 11 a.m. women's varsity game and the Tigers' 1:30 p.m. men's varsity game.

The reserves are in action again on Wednesday, Oct. 6, as the team travels down to play Cincinnati State in the Queen City. Game time is 4 p.m., but directions to the field will not be available until Tuesday.
