Wittenberg Squeaks Past Mt. St. Joseph On Last-Second Goal
Sept. 14, 2005
CINCINNATI, Ohio - It wasn't easy, but then again when you play on a knife's edge like the Wittenberg women's soccer team, it never really is. The defensive-oriented Tigers used another outstanding defensive performance and a goal by junior forward Liz Volz inside of the final minute to defeat Mount St. Joseph, 1-0.
The game improved the Tigers, ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region and one of three teams in the "Others Receiving Votes" category of the latest national coaches' association poll, to a perfect 5-0 on the 2005 season. It was the fourth straight shutout for Wittenberg, and the fourth one-goal win for the Tigers.
Volz scored her third goal of the season, putting her into a tie with sophomore Lisa Rusch for the top spot on the team in scoring in 2005. Her goal at the 89:12 mark of the game was unassisted.
Sophomore goaltender Meghan O'Rourke was not credited with a save in the game, which Wittenberg dominated with a 23-8 shots advantage. However, a defensive save, credited to the Tigers as a team was the difference for the Tigers, preserving the shutout.
