SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg reserve team played its final match of the 2006 season against the visiting Cedarville Yellow Jackets and pulled out a hard-fought 2-0 decision.
Playing in difficult weather conditions that included rain and cold temperatures on a condensed field since each team played with just eight players and few substitutes, the Tigers created many chances and outshot Cedarville, but they could not seem to find the back of the net.
The Yellow Jackets, though, could not stop the Tiger offense for a solid 45 minutes due to a slotted ball from freshman Karen Girard directed to fellow freshman Sara Pirozzi. No other goals were scored the rest of the half as Wittenberg took a 1-0 into halftime.
The Tigers played solid defense, working hard to cover an open backfield in a small-sided game and recovering balls and playing them out to the middle and attacking thirds of the field regularly. In these efforts to keep a clean backfield, the defense was able to find sophomore midfielder Justine Girard on the key play of the second half. From there, Pirozzi struck again, controlling the ball from Girard on the outside and then dribbling through two Yellow Jacket defenders to beat the Cedarville goalkeeper and knock the ball home for the second and final goal of the game.
