URBANA, Ohio - As the 4pm game time approached it was clear that an extra effort was needed to assure the Wittenberg Reserves their second victory of the season. Urbana, hosting its first reserve game of the 2006 season, was eager to play. In addition, simple math made it apparent that the Tigers had only 9 players available.
As a general team rule, a Wittenberg soccer player is always up for a challenge, so game on. Shortly into the action, Tiger forward and 'track star,' Tara Osborne, opened up the scoring to give Wittenberg the 1-0 lead. Urbana equalized 15 minutes later to knot the score at 1-1. Setting the ball up for the ensuing kickoff, Allison Macke took it upon herself to get back the lead. She dribbled through the entire Urbana defense and slotted a ball for Osborne to tap in her second goal of the game. Soon after, Macke found the back of the net herself to extend the lead to 3-1.
When the second half began, Katie Miller, Amy Apidone, Kelsi Hains and Kristy Parker knew it was their turn to help the team as Urbana would now be pushing numbers forward to get back into the game. They did not disappoint as they cut out ball after ball and defended very well. Nevertheless, Urbana made it close again, finding the back of the net to bring the score to 3-2 with about 15 minutes to go in the contest. It was soon after Urbana's second goal that the Girard cousins took their turn impacting the game. Justine Girard, after winning a ball in the midfield, played out wide for Macke in space. Macke turned the outside corner and found the feet of Karen Girard, who calmly slotted home the eventual game-winner that gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Urbana would make it 4-3 in the closing minutes, but it was the Wittenberg Tigers who got a "gutty and hard fought" win in the first match of a home-and-home series.
Wittenberg will host Urbana Friday, Sept. 29 as part of the women's soccer program's Family Weekend activities. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. under the lights at Edwards-Maurer Field.
