Tigers Shut Out On Road At Transylvania

Meghan O'Rourke
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Less than 24 hours after assuming the No. 18 position in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, the Wittenberg Tigers were turned away by host Transylvania, 1-0, in a non-conference game.

The loss ended a four-game win streak, during which time the Tigers had shut out all four opponents, including 2006 NCAA Division III Tournament qualifiers Capital and DePauw. In falling to 4-2 on the still young season, Wittenberg allowed just its fourth goal of the 2007 campaign. Transylvania, also a tournament qualifier last year, improved to 3-2.

The Tigers actually outshot the host team 8-5, but the only shot that mattered was the one Transylvania's Erin Rush put in the back of the net just 1:47 into the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) made three saves in the game, compared to five for Transylvania's netminder.

Senior forward Sydney Bates (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) led all players with three shots in the game, including a pair that were on goal. The Tigers hope to get the offense untracked again Saturday when they host another quality foe in Centre College. Kick-off is 4 p.m. at Edwards-Maurer Field.
