SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's soccer team must have heard that the Wilmington Quakers favor a fast, aggressive style, because that is what the Tigers brought to the pitch Saturday in a big non-conference game.

The women in Red & White played good, clean, aggressive soccer against nationally ranked Wilmington, which in the most recent NSCAA Division III poll sat in spot number 17, one spot above the ranking the Wittenberg women formerly held and are looking to take back. The end result was a hard-fought 1-0 victory, an important win in terms of Great Lakes Region positioning.

The first period was rought with exciting soccer, despite passing without any goals. Wittenberg unleashed seven shots in the period, four of them on goal, and all repelled by Wilmington goalkeeper Casey McKinney.

In the second period, the energetic play continued, but the Tigers managed to clear the goose egg off their portion of the scoreboard, putting ball to net when Jamie Mack (Rochester, NY/Penfield) scored a beeline goal from 10 yards out off a Lindsey Rusch (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) assist.

The defense once again held strong, holding the Quakers to just three shots on goal all night, helping produce yet another Tiger shutout.

The women kick again in Springfield on Wednesday versus Ohio Northern. Game time is 7 p.m.
