Wittenberg Settles For Tie At Allegheny

Jordan Bamberger
MEADVILLE, Pa. - After a long bus ride and overnight stay in western Pennsylvania, the Wittenberg Tigers were unable to close the deal in a 0-0 tie with host Allegheny.

The tie left Wittenberg clinging to faint hope of a regular season North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship. With one game remaining, at arch-rival Denison at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, the Tigers now stand 10-2-5 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference. Allegheny is now 7-8-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the NCAC.

The game was played on a muddy playing surface, which possibly contributed to an overall lack of quality scoring chances in the game. The two teams split 24 shots almost evenly, and both goalkeepers were credited with five saves. For Wittenberg senior goalkeeper Jordan Bamberger (Solon, Ohio/Solon), the shutout was her ninth of the season as she and the stout Tiger defense has yielded just 11 goals in 17 games this season.

Offensively, Wittenberg had three players finish with more than one shot in the game - senior midfielder Suzanne Medwid (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), senior forward Corey Shubitowski (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) and junior forward Emily Murray (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey). However, none of the five Tigers credited with a shot on goal had more than one in the game.

The Tigers are virtually assured of a berth in the annual four-team NCAC Tournament, but their hopes of hosting a semifinal game hinge on a win at Denison. Wittenberg has won the last two NCAC Tournament titles.
