In the 24th minute, Goss received a brilliant one-touch pass from junior Emily Murray (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey), then made no mistake as she drilled it past the Alma goalkeeper. The goal helped jumpstart the offense, which went on to outshoot Alma 7-0 in the first stanza.
The second half started just as head coach Norm Riker would have liked, as the Tigers doubled their lead five minutes in. Senior Corey Shubitowski (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) picked up a loose ball at the top right side of the box and curled it around the stranded goalkeeper from about 30 yards out. From there, the Tigers defense showed why it was one of the best units in the country in 2008, shutting down the Scots to only two shots on the night.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Bamberger (Solon, Ohio/Solon) collected a clean sheet on the night, picking up the shutout in her first start between the pipes for the Tigers.
The Tigers move to 1-0 with the win, while continuing a streak at home dating back to the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Wittenberg is back in action on Sunday, when another MIAA squad, the Olivet Comets, visit Edwards-Maurer Field for a 4 p.m. opening kick-off.
