Springfield, Ohio -- Heidelberg, ranked 7th in the Great Lakes Region, scored three first-half goals which propelled them to knock off the Tigers, 4-2, in their 2000 home opener. Heidelberg scored first, late in the first half, as Allison Frizzell headed in a corner kick goal.
The scoring jostled back and forth, with Wittenberg's freshman forward Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) assisted freshman forward Melissa Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown) to her first collegiate goal. Heidelberg then regained the lead on a goal by Sara Silvennoinen and took a 3-1 halftime lead on a Molly Thorton goal.
Early in the second half, Wittenberg's freshman forward Jill Rekers (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Emily Gersbach (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin).
While Wittenberg outshot Heidelberg 17-6, they were unable to overcome the scoring prowess of The 'Berg, when, with 57 seconds remaining in the game, Casei Castner scored their final goal.
