A year after taking the reins of the Wittenberg University men's and women's track teams, Steve Shutt has begun to build a stable foundation from which the Tigers hope to climb to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference.

A graduate of Allegheny College with degrees in physics and psychology, Shutt is no stranger to the NCAC. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Gators' indoor and outdoor track and field squads, earining all-conference honors in the pole vault.

Shutt came to Wittenberg after serving as the assistant coach at Hillsdale College, where he also served as director of the intramural program. While at Hillsdale, Shutt coached national qualifiers in the men's and women's 400, women's 400 hurdles, men's hammer and an All-American in the women's high jump. He also coached provisional qualifiers in the pole vault, triple jump and the 4x400 relay.

Shutt also has completed the coursework for a master's degree in exercise science from Slippery Rock University, where he served as an assistant coach and worked numerous camps and clinics, involving such events as men's and womens pole vault, high jump, javelin, multi-events and cross country. In addition, Shutt recieved Silver Level Accreditation from the USTAF Pole Vault Development Committee and is a USTAF Level II coach in the endurance events, jumps and throws.

Shutt, who is also Wittenberg's head men's and women's cross country coach, resides in Springfield.





Assistant Coach: Ralph Bergdoll


Ralph Bergdoll became part of the Wittenberg coaching staff in 2000 after more than 40 years of coaching in the Dayton area. A graduate of West Virginia Weslyan and Xavier University, Bergdoll is also certified in Level I and II with the USTAF and is Level I instructor.

As a scholastic coach Bergdoll has experience with both cross-country and track programs. For ten consecutive years (1990-1999), he has had competitors qualify for the OHSAA State track meet. In 1988 Bergdoll was inducted in the Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. He has served many years as a meet manager and has conducted four Level I schools for USATF




Assistant Coach: Brian Forrester

Brian Forrester graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Sports Management. While attending SRU he was an All-Conference performer in the shot put and a two-time Indoor Athlete of the Year. Prior to transfering to SRU he was also an all-conference performer in the shot put and discus while at Grove City College. Forrester epitomizes what hard work and dedication can accomplish.

Forrester has coached high school throwers for four years. He is a member of Long and Strong Throwers Club and a Level II certified Throws Coach through USA Track and Field. Forrester also has extensive knowledge in the area of strength and conditioning. He has worked with and been around many National and World-Class throwers. Forrester utilizes an intensely enthusiastic and comprehensive approach to developing athletes under his tutelage.
