Spring 2008 Update from Director of Greek Life
- At Mid-America Greek Conference our Greek community received the Gamma Sigma Alpha Scholarship Award for exceeding the All Campus GPA by the largest amount for campuses our size. One of 6 campuses to win this award. Wittenberg received an Honorable Mention in the Fall 2007 also.
- Panhellenic Council invited a team from the National Panhellenic Council to visit our campus and help us to assess our procedures, community and recruitment. Wittenberg Panhellenic received high praises overall and are now working to implement the suggestions for improving recruitment and PR.
- After two years of discussions with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. three young men were able to bring Xi Chi chapter back to Wittenberg after a three year absence. They were met with great excitement and support from the entire campus community, especially the IFC which they have joined. Plans are to take more members in the fall and spring of 2008-10, and annually after that. Dr. John Marr and the Director of Greek Life will be advising them in partnership with members of the Columbus graduate chapter.
- 64 men and 97 women were pledged in Spring 2008, mostly freshmen. Retention is up from past spring pledge classes with only 4 depledgings noted.
- In February, Greeks sponsored the third Crossing the Line hazing prevention program with participation from all Greek chapters. A Witt Greek alumna, Mindy Sopher, facilitated the program. Mindy is a Greek Life professional at NC State and winner of the AFA Distinguished Service award in 2007.
- Panhellenic (sorority council), Interfraternity Council and the Student Development Department held “ Irish night” to promote Irish culture and an alcohol free event for St. Patrick’s Day. An Dochas, a Celtic band, and three Wittenberg student Irish dancers presented the program which was open to campus with about 75 attending and enjoying it.
- The first Wittenberg Up til Dawn program was held on February 23rd to celebrate our students raising $21, 435 for St. Jude’s Hospital. This was organized and supported by former Panhellenic President, Jackie Flickinger, and every Greek chapter as well as other students.
- As a community our fraternities and sororities have raised more than $5000 this semester for charitable organizations like Make a Wish Foundation; Sight Loss Services; Prevent Child Abuse; Camp Joy and Ronald McDonald House.
