From Berlin comes Hans “the German” to help with the Franco-German dig at the famed Sphinx of Giza. Alongside Mordeaux he is excavating the legendary Sphinx of Giza for what treasures and knowledge might be buried there.
From London comes Gary, who is on a quest for adventure, one that has brought him to the Sphinx of Giza.
From Washington D.C. the Director at Large of the Library of Congress Yumil Sanders has been sent by the Organization for the Retrieval of Cultural Antiquities, also known as ORCA, to investigate the excavations at the Sphinx of Giza.
From New York the brawny Gus has been sent by ORCA director George Saunders, to assist Librarian Sanders if there is a need for muscle.
Librarian Sanders arrives at the site of the excavation, and is immediately directed to Mordeaux the head of the excavation. They have a short discussion about the dig and what has been discovered so far. Meanwhile Hans is out making sure the workers are working on the dig as they should. Gary arrives at the dig site by taxi a little bit later.
Gus hails a taxi from the airport and asks to be taken directly to the Sphinx. Once there Gus gets out of the taxi, and looks around. Then sticks his head back into the passenger side window and asks the cabbie to point out the Sphinx to him. The cabbie points in the direction of the Sphinx and the dig site. Gus pays the cabbie and head over to the site.
Once at the site Gus asks the nearest worker where he can find Yumil. Fortunately he manages to find a worker who speaks English And knows where Yumil is. Gus the marches over to where the group is talking. He introduces himself, and the rest of them introduce themselves as well.
As they are talking, there is a sudden commotion near the base of the Sphinx. The group starts to make its way over to the commotion where a man worker tells them that they have found a doorway at the base of the Sphinx. Before the group gets to the doorway there is a loud explosion and smoke and fire erupt from the doorway.
The workers start to panic as they yell and scream about the curse! While most of the workers flee to a distance, the header digger, Yusef, only stays because Mordeaux makes him stay. The group decides to head down into the doorway to investigate. Gus readies his crowbar and starts walking slowly into the doorway.
As they make their way in, they enter a long hallway, with a broken open urn next to the entrance way. Across the hall is another doorway, flanked by two tall Anubis Statues. While Yumil, Mordeaux and Gary stay back, Hans investigates the broken urn. Gus meanwhile walks cautiously towards the other doorway.
Just as Gus steps between the two Anubis statues, they suddenly come to life, and one takes a swing at Gus, barely missing his arm. Gus swings back with his crowbar, breaking it in two on the Statue. The other statue starts to make its way towards the other members of the part at the back of the room. Gus swings with what is left of his crowbar and does nothing to hurt the statue that is attacking him, and the statue does nothing in damage in return.
The others manage to pull out there guns and take a shot or two at the statue attacking them, but not doing much damage. Gus pulls back from the Statue he is attacking, and pulls out his derringer pistol and shots the statue causing it to crumble.
Gary using the bayonet on the end of his rifle spears the Statue but manages to get the bayonet stuck in one of its joints. With Gary distracting the statue, Hans gets behind it and shots it, causing it to crumble into dust as well.
From outside Yusef yells nervously down to the group asking what is going on. Hans replies, “nothing, no problem just big spiders.” Hans then turns to the group and tells them that it does not make sense to scare them more than they already are. Before they continue on, Hans asks for Yusef to toss a shovel down, which comes clanking down. Hans picks it up and hands it to Gus to replace the broken crowbar.
Gus then proceeds cautiously on to the next room, which is a short hallway with a mummy lying down on each side. Gus raises his shovel and gets ready to smash one of them mummies in the head, but Yumil tries to intervene. Yumil slips though and falls all over the mummy and Gus whacks the mummy in the head crushing it, while mumbling about not having to worry about more “big spiders.” As Yumil gets up and dusts himself off, Gus smashes the head of the other mummy.
The group moves into the next room to find a large chasm. Before Gus tries to jump it Hans stops him. He waves a finger at him and walks back towards the doorway. He comes back a minute or two later with some wooden planks which he places down across the chasm. The group then simply walks across the wooden planks to the other side.
After a bend the group walks into a large triangular room, with an altar at the far end. On top of the altar is a tablet that looks like it is made of something between gold and brass. At this distance though not much can be made out from what is on the tablet. In order to get a better look the group walks cautiously towards the altar. As they tip-toe closer waiting for something to happen nothing does.
Once they reach the altar, Hans and Yumil look it over. On the tablet is a picture of a continent labeled Atlantis with several landmarks circling it. The landmarks include; the Sphinx, Stonehenge, a Mayan Pyramid, and an Eastern Island statue. Hans then grabs a few things from his pouch and makes a rubbing of the tablet. Once that is done, Mordeaux reaches over and picks up the tablet, much to the chagrin of the party. When nothing happens Mordeaux grins and starts to walk back the way they came with the tablet.
Suddenly there is a grating noise as the wall behind the altar slides out of the way, and a large boulder comes rumbling down towards the party. The group starts to run, to escape the boulder. At first Hans is not too fast, but when his shoe is nearly taken off by the boulder he quickly gets up to speed. Gus is a bit slower and manages to end up running beside the boulder briefly as it bounces off the wall opposite him. The party all manages to reach the chasm and run across the wooden planks, which snap under the weight of the boulder causing it to get wedged in.
The group climbs out of the underground tunnels, only to find that Mordeaux no longer has the tablet. He replies to them saying that the tablet is in a safe place for now.
