The Quiet Year

For a long time, we were at war with The Jackals. But now, we've driven them off, and we have this - a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to build our community up and learn once again how to work together. Come Winter, the Frost Shepherds will arrive and we might not survive beyond that. But we don't know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, there is an opportunity to build something.

For a long time, we were at war with The Jackals. But now, we've driven them off, and we have this - a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to build our community up and learn once again how to work together. Come Winter, the Frost Shepherds will arrive and we might not survive beyond that. But we don't know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, there is an opportunity to build something.
The Quiet Year is a map game. Below is the narrative from the game that was run at WittCon XI, as much that could be reconstructed!

Week 1
Spring
(Pam)
Temptress girl "Sara Jessica Parker" arrives, seduces men, then guilts them and invites them to church. We are not fooled by this act.
New Project: mini-golf course
Week 2
Spring
(Joseph)
Buddhist Monk monastery.
    Question: How do we feel about their bell-ringing?
  • "If it's annoying we'll kick them out"
  • "As long as they feed the cats"
  • "As long as the cats like them"
  • "What a man does on his own property is no concern of mine, but if I can hear it I won't be a happy camper."
  • "Let's build a giant privacy fence."
  • Conclusion "It is agreed that they can only ring it once a day."
Week 3

Cats have the highest status. Anyone they hiss at has to leave immediately. Project Completed: the much anticipated 2-hole mini-golf course was a success; the king cat was the MC and cut the yarn, morale increased ten-fold.

Bad Omen: the lava-fissure widens
New Project: Cat Castle

Abandoned bridge over the waterfall.
Discovered: infestation of mince in town

Someone new arrives, venture capitalists monetize the endless supply of soda and sell them, 1 soda for 2 cats.
New Project: building the plane-o-copter

Natural Disaster: swamp-nado destroys the golf-course.
Discovery: the ruins are haunted by ghosts
Week 8

A boy stars digging and finds a butter fountain.
New Project: corn-fields.
Week 9
Spring
(Zakkiyat)
Machine used to dig for iron is found, but it's cursed; so we push it into the quicksand.
Discovered: abandoned diamond mine, pouring diamonds into the river.
Project Completed: Cat-Castle completed but the ghosts moved into the top floor, but they don't mind and just stare as always.

Most Hideous thing in the region is the diamonds.
New Project: Tavern.
Week 11

Storing food in a giant popcorn popper next to lava-fissure.
Discovered: the monks have a distillery!
Week 12

Natural Predators in the area include Teddy Bears, but they just give hugs.
Completed Project: plane-o-copter, used for low-flying local travel, fitted out with nice arm-chairs.
Completed Project: we have corn.
Discovered: the venture capitalists have been dead for weeks.

The oldest member of our community is an elderly lady on a bench feeding bread to a bird.

New Project related to food: the monks are growing a vineyard of red grapes.
Discovered: zombies from a neighboring village, but they just eat diamonds.
Week 15

Someone new arrives: a puppy in distress, "Winston", lost its owner.
Discovered: Teddy Bear has hugged a cat to death and is covered in blood.
Week 16

New Project: A Festivus pole where you can air your grievances.
The Guard, "Gaurdsley" declares "No lollygagging.".
Week 17

New Abundance: Half-full cups of water.
Discovered: the venture capitalists were selling their kitten-profits to the monks who were using their souls to power their distillery.
Week 18
Summer
(Joseph)
The ghosts make demands: rebuild our fortress and swear fealty to us since we were here first.
New Project: Quidditch Pitch in the old cornfield.
Week 19
Summer
(Jeff)
New Scarcity: Self-Actualization, after the great self-help book fire.
New Project Finding the dog's order.
Project Completed: the monks finish their red-grape vineyard and share it with our community.
Week 20
Summer
(Pam)
A stubborn community member starts a foolish project: a ladder to heaven.
Discovered: Angry cat is angry at Sara Jessica Parker whom we finally kick out because it has been hissing at her.
Project Completed: the dog-owner was not found so we pack the dog up in the plane-o-copter and, fly it out far away, and leave it there so we don't have to see it being sad.
Week 21

Discovered: a swamp shark. New Project: community member wants to set up a shop and make tiny marble figurines out of our scarce supply.
Project Completed: we finish the Quidditch Pitch, but don't have any brooms or balls and so just throw mud at each other.
Week 22

Strangers wander in: a father and his blind son looking for their dog.
New Project: a mecha-cat to deal with the Teddy Bear predator.
Week 23
Summer
(Zakkiyat)
There's another tornado, and the swamp shark is caught up inside it.
New Project: building apple trees in the Quidditch field.
Week 24

A project finishes early: Mecha-Cat!
Week 25
Summer
(Joseph)
Someone returns: Sara Jessica Parker comes back, but was shunned by her community and returns to ours, shaves her head, and joins the Buddhist monastery.
New Project: making a water park out of the pond and river/waterfall.
Week 26

Members of the Parish show up and 'stop' the monks, trying to tear the building down.
New Project: attaching a ladder to the shark.
Completed Project: the stairway got as tall as it could without buckling, but... didn't get to heaven. "Blasphemy Ladder"
Week 27
Summer
(Zakkiyat)
Obsessed with a project's perfection: the apple orchard is going to take us 3 extra weeks.
Discovered: the zombies go to save the monks from the Parishioners.
Week 28
Summer
(Catie)
The strongest among us dies: The ghosts, angry because we didn't rebuild their fortress, and kill the cat-king.
Completed Project: yarn was a big success, the cats are in love.
At this point we do not have any more written records of what happened, but we do have the final disposition of the community
