Built in 1982, the Health Physical Education and Recreation Center (HPERC) houses a 25-yard by 25-meter swimming pool, six racquetball courts, three full-length basketball courts and volleyball courts. All facilities are open to students with their ID cards. Special events are also regularly held in the main gym and have included comedians Mark Curry, Carrot Top and Jay Leno, as well as guest lecturers Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, Judy Shepard, James Carville and Ann Coulter.

The Old Field House, located on the west side, contains a gymnasium, classrooms, offices and visiting team locker rooms. It is also home to the strength center located in the basement, which is equipped with StairMasters, Life Cycle bikes, treadmills, seven new Nautilus machines and 8,000 pounds of free weights. Concerts are occasionally held in the field house and have featured such notable groups as O.A.R., Guster, the Violent Femmes, Don McClean and A Tribe Called Quest.

Wittenberg is an NCAA Division III school and a member of the competitive North Coast Athletic Conference. Approximately 30 percent of our students participate in varsity athletics, and 65 percent participate in intramurals. Just east of the HPERC is Edwards-Maurer Field and the Earl F. Morris Track. Bill Edwards Field, where the soccer, rugby and softball teams play, is located two blocks from campus on the corner of McCreight Ave. and Plum St. The newly renovated Carleton-Davidson Stadium, the official home of Tigers baseball, is one of the finest small college baseball facilities in the country. It is located two miles east of campus.

The new Bob Rosencrans Fitness Center at the Athletics Hall of Honor opened at the HPERC in 2006. In addition to new state-of- the art fitness equipment for both workout facilities, the Earl F. Morris Track was re-surfaced and Edwards- Maurer Field received a new synthetic grass surface. The lobby of the HPERC will receive a variety of aesthetic improvements.
