Wednesday, Jan. 30 Alum Recital:
Mark Heeg (BM '84), piano Heeg is Assistant Professor of Piano at Eastern Mediterranean University in northern Cyprus. He has performed as a soloist in the U.S., Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Egypt, and Japan. Dr. Heeg will perform music by Schubert, Liszt, and Granados, as well as short Liszt transcriptions of works by Chopin and Schumann.

Friday, Feb. 1 Candlemas:
Medieval Candlelight Vespers Service Featuring Schola Cantorum, a 14-member men's liturgical ensemble directed by Donald Busarow and Wind in the Woods, an early music ensemble (recorders, lute, crumhorn, drum) with Margaret Erin, Jenelle Allen, Deb Toy, Lawrence Pizter, Amy Vaubel, Michael Mattimore, Dan Duncan, and Charles Larkowski. This medieval service, with no music later than the 16th century, has no electricity, no organ, and is lighted only by candles. In place of a modern sermon, Wittenberg Pastor Andy Tune will read from the writings of one of the early church Fathers. Several hymns are also sung by the congregation.

David Schubert, baritone, with Diane Slagle, piano The new chairperson of Wittenberg's Music Department makes his Wittenberg recital debut, with a program of art songs from the 19th and 20th centuries, beginning with Schumann's Dichterliebe (one of the greatest song cycles of the Romantic era), followed by Francis Poulenc's Le bestiaire and Gerald Finzi's Let Us Garlands Bring.

Trudy Faber, organ Faber's annual Wittenberg recital will include Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E minor, Josef Rheinberger's Sonata XV in D Major, music by 20th-century composer Jeanne Demessieux, two pieces by 18th-century English women composers (to be played on the harpsichord), and Vincent Persichetti's Do Not Go Gentle, Op. 132 (played with the feet alone!; with stanzas of the Dylan Thomas 1951 poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night interspersed throughout the piece, narrated by Wittenberg Professor Emeritus J. Arthur Faber). The recital will end with Dudley Buck's exciting Variations on the Star-Spangled Banner.

Saturday, Apr. 12 Wittenberg Handbell Choir, Trudy Faber, conductor Fourteen ringers will play five octaves of bells made by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry (Britain's oldest manufacturing company, making bells for well over 500 years, including London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell). The program includes a setting of the hymn All Creatures of Our God and King and excerpts from Phantom of the Opera. Oboist David Hearne '10 will perform with the group in several pieces. Harris, Felix Mendelssohn, Morten Lauridsen, RenŽ Clausen, Manning Sherwin, and Mangwani Mpulele (arranged by Robert DeCormier). The Chamber Orchestra will perform music by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, David Holsinger, and Norman Leyden, as well as a cello concerto by Antonio Vivaldi, with soloist Daniel Kazez.

Wittenberg Choir, Donald Busarow, conductor Commemorating the passing of Dr. Thomas A. The Choir will perform four movements from Johannes BrahmsŐ German Requiem (with soloist Susan Musselman), Rupert Lang's Kontakion, and Donald Busarow's Nunc Dimittis.

Yuzuriha; sponsored by East Asian Studies and the Music Department Yuzuriha is a four-member taiko group from Kanazawa, Japan (Ishikawa prefecture) that performs traditional pieces, original arrangements, and original works. Their primary instruments are three types of drums: nagado, oke-taiko, and shime-taiko. Other instruments used by Yuzuriha include the shinobue (a Japanese transverse flute) and shamisen (a three-stringed instrument played with a plectrum).

The Music Department presents a variety of performances by students, faculty, and guest artists. The Wittenberg Series presents major events that are free and open to the public. Recent years have included such internationally renowned artists as the Beaux Arts Trio, Empire Brass, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Bach Choir of Berlin, Guarneri Quartet, Chicago Symphony Winds, Waverly Consort, Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Emerson String Quartet, King's Singers, Kronos String Quartet, Gregg Smith Singers, and pianist Emanuel Ax. Students can also enjoy an impressive array of off-campus concerts, including those presented by the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the Springfield Arts Council.
