Music completes the world of sophomore Ben Williams. It has filled his past; it has a strong presence in his present; and his plans for the future are built around it.
“My passion for music has thrived at Wittenberg,” Williams says. He serves as manager of the Wittenberg Symphonic Band, the largest instrumental group on campus. The band includes woodwinds, brass and percussion, and its musicians include students, faculty, staff and members of the Springfield community.
“I felt a sense of community around campus more than just a small school community. I’m not sure what it was, but it was different” he says.
His love of music includes vocalizing, and he sings with Wittenberg’s all-male a cappella group, WittMen Crew. The students perform at local events and concerts on campus.
“What surprised me are the friends I’ve made within WittMen Crew, and how quickly we’ve become brothers,” he says. The ensemble provides background vocals for the 2007 Christmas message on the university’s Web site.
Williams has made the most of his time at Wittenberg. Although he readily admits he has felt a lot of pressure, he says the resources to help him control and manage time wisely have been available.
With plans to study abroad at Kings College in Cambridge, Williams’ ultimate goal is graduate school for a masters in music. He then plans to return home to Louisville as a music director at a school or a private institution. ”
